Call For Artist from the Midwest SDA Member Base

Edit 11/31/12 1:30am Some people were having problems connecting or finding the link on the left hand column so I am adding it here too.

Hi all,
You will notice a new picture/link on the left hand column looking like the one above. Click on this picture and it will take you to the prospectus for the new SDA-IL exhibit being held in 2013 titled "Always Something..." and is open to all members of the SDA living in the Midwest. This includes: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. To become a member of the SDA you can click on the SDA logo on the left hand column and it will take you to the Surface Design Association's website. Please take a gander at the prospectus at your leisure. There will be more information coming in the near future. Feel free to comment or email Jeanette Thompson (the Illinois SDA rep) or myself.

Thank you,
Frances Krueger-Jackson

Article in Quilting Arts magazine

I have an article on digital design and printing using an online printer in the December/January issue of Quilting Arts. Please check it out. Available online at QuiltingArts.com or on the newstands.

I am excited to see the cloth and the words in print! This is my 3rd article with Quilting Arts. They also published my DVD - Three Dimensional Fiber Art: Shape and Texture, Light and Shadow, which has been doing well.

Having spent so much of my previous career in publishing from the publisher end, it is fun to be an author.

Art Quilts at International Quilt Festival in Houston

Here are some photos from the SAQA Seasonal Palette exhibit that was at Houston a week ago. The show will be traveling to Cincinnati, Long Beach a a few other venues over the next 18 months, I hope to go see it in Cincinnati next April. My piece is the water reflection piece at the far right in the first photo. 38 artists were asked to make pieces for the show - each of us were given a particular season and color collection to work from. As well, we each created a notebook documenting our process and work along the way. There is a catalog ($20) available from the SAQA.com site. Photo credits: Gregory Case.

Another exhibit at Houston was A Sense of Scale. Very large pieces were interspersed with groupings of small pieces. This exhibit will also be traveling to other venues and also has a catalog available from SAQA.com. My piece in this exhibit was Mingled Waters - the very large piece shown in photo below.

Hi all,

I thought you might be interested in an early warning that the Muskegon Museum of Art is planning three terrific five-day workshops in conjunction with its exhibit INNOVATORS AND LEGENDS: Generation in Textiles and Fibers which opens December 13, 2012.

The workshops will take place the week of December 10. Famed art quilter Nancy Crow will be one of the instructors. Native American basket maker Dawn Nichols Walden will be teaching, as will tapestry artists Geary Jones and David Johnson, former head of fibers at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts. Specific dates, prices and further details will be available soon, but I wanted to give you a heads up since the classes have to be filled by the end of August to be held.

At least a third of the artists plan to attend the opening and Gerhardt Knodel will facilitate a panel discussion that day. Here's a partial list of participants in the show: Arturo Sandoval, Sherri Smith, Warren Seelig, Cynthia Schira, Gyongy Laky, Jane Sauer, Jane Lackey, Gerhardt Knodel, Anne Wilson, Tom Lundberg, Nick Cave, Sandra Brownlee, Deborah Carlson, Joan Livingstone, Lindsey Ketterer Gates, Ted Hallman, Michael Olsewski, Laura Foster Nicholson, Kay Sekimachi, Katherine Westphal, Piper Sheppard, Lewis Knauss, Jason Pollen, Mark Newport. The exhibit will travel to the Schweinfurth Art Center, the University of Kentucky, and Colorado State University.

This show will be an amazing event to have here in West Michigan! Please pass this info on to anyone else who might be interested. The museum website is below but they don't have much info up yet (and the above info is subject to change). Curator Geary Jones is organizing the classes--you can contact him directly with questions. I'll send out updated info when it's available. Exhibit information here. Contact email for Geary Jones is here.

Love, peace & joy,

Opening Friday, June 8, 6-9:30 PM

Weaver’s World/ Robots: Drawings and Mixed Media

Soft robots comment on hard questions about humans’ use of technology. Papier-mâché interactive robots, bronze robots in embroidered boxes, and larger than life two-dimensional airbrushed cyborgs combine lush fabrics and vivid airbrushed colors.
“Kathy Weaver makes palatable harsh social issues such as war, discrimination, ecology, and technological displacement,”commented Steve Jones, director of the Robert T. Wright Gallery, College of Lake County.

Weaver is interested in robotics and it’s influence on our medical and military communities. She draws prototype robots developed in the Robotics Department at The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the patients who are pioneers in using them. Sandro Mussa-Invaldi, director of the lab states, Kathy Weaver came as a quiet guest and acute observer of our research laboratories. (Her) drawings are a positive reminder of the long way that is ahead of us…”.

About the artist:
Kathy Weaver was awarded an Illinois State Artists project grant for Weaver’s World. She has recently exhibited in Crossing Lines, World Financial Center, New York, and Stitched Together, Art and Science, at Fermilab, Batavia, Illinois. Her works are in the collection of The Museum of Art and Design in New York, College of Lake County and private collections. Zia Gallery, Winnetka, Illinois, represents her work.
Kathy Weaver currently lives and maintains a studio in Highland Park, Illinois.

Fabulous Art Auction in Edwardsville April 12

Confluence Over Ogallala Reservoir c2009 jacquard textile by Laura Strand

For all who live in the St. Louis metro area and Madison and St. Clair Counties and beyond in Illinois, the 33rd Annual Friends of Art auction will be held Thursday April 12 in Edwardsville.  Proceeds fund the visiting artist program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and benefit several other concerns for the art department.  All kinds of art will be auctioned from every department--paintings, drawings, prints, graphics, photography, sculpture, glass, ceramics and several fiber pieces.  Donations have come from current students, faculty, alumni and friends in the community.

The fabulous weaving above was donated by Professor Laura Strand, head of textiles at SIUE.  The work was originally woven for her solo show at Jacoby Arts Center in Alton for the 2009 Innovations in Textiles event.  It is nearly 50 inches wide and absolutely gorgeous!

I have donated a length of shibori rusted silk in partnership with a friend who has pledged to make a custom garment for the lucky winner of the bid.  You can read about and see pictures of my donation as well as some of the other textile donations for the auction in my latest post at Sentimental Pentimento, my blog.

I got my MFA at SIUE in 2003 and have been involved with the auction for about 6 years.  For the last 2 years I've been in charge of photographing every item donated so that we can create a visual catalog for our website and facebook page.  That's turned into quite a lot of work this year as we've had over 270 works of art donated!  195 of them will be in the live auction, 75 in the silent auction.  Wow that's a lot of Photoshopping!

Consider yourself invited!
When:  Thursday, April 12--preview starts 6pm, live auction begins 7 pm
Where: satellite campus of Lewis and Clark Community College, 600 Troy Road, Edwardsville, IL
(This location has sentimental value for many alumni as it was the former home of the SIUE art department for over 25 years-known as the Wagner Complex.)
Admission:  $5
Cash bar, free snacks, tons of fun.

LIKE us on Facebook where you can see the entire catalog online
Visit our website (ditto for the catalog, filed by medium)

Hope you can make it!

Joanne's Textility

Stephen Maine, Mesh painting #11-011

If you haven't seen the Joanne Mattera Art Blog, click the links in this post and get on over there. Joanne is a New York based artist who works in encaustic and digital media, and she has a special fondness for textile art. She and Mary Birmingham have co-curated an exhibit at the Visual Art Center of New Jersey called Textiliy. The works in this exhibit, to quote from the catalog, "draw from a textile tradition, or ... exhibit a material presence or conceptual quality related to textiles." So the works selected either use textiles as a medium or reference textiles in their concept and presentation. Here is a link to the exhibit catalog which Joanne reprints on her blog. There are all kinds of wonderful pictures of the art.

Here is a link to Joanne's most recent blog post where she talks about artists' ghettoizing themselves according to the media they work in. I think this is relevant to many of us who think of ourselves of artists first and textile artists second, but who tend to get boxed in by our medium. I follow Joanne's blog faithfully. You should too.

New Picture Heading Right Hand Column!

I have gotten two responses so far with photos. Pat Vivod's work titled "Pond Ripples" will head the blog on the right hand column form March 15th to April 14th, 2012. Clairan Ferrono's work titled "Blue Mountain: Saugerties" will be put up on April 15th and head the blog till May 14th, 2012. Again, if you are interested in having a photo of your work at the top of the blog for a month email me at the email address listed in the post just previous to this one.

Here is the full description for Pat Vivod's amazing fabric work (I can only imagine the time and the planning that went into the making of this fabulous piece...love it!):

Call for images of SDA-IL member's artwork!

Do you have an image of your artwork that you would like to see on the top right of this blog for a month? Then send me an email with your name and image (you might want to watermark it discreetly if you are worried about copyright) to my email at "frannies felts and fancies at g mail dot com" (make sure you take out the spaces and change the 'at' to the at symbol, I am trying to keep spiders from picking up my email address). I would like to change the top right image at least once a month to display works from Illinois members of the Surface Design Association.

P.S. The above image is tossed in for your inspiration since spring appears to be right around the corner in much of Illinois. That, and I hate to do a post w/o pictures...lol. I really need to take more pictures of my artwork too.

100 Artists Living In The Midwest

Greeting All,
Here is the description of a new book that will be coming out later mid-year and Clairan Ferrono and Trish Williams are two of the 100. "This expansive book takes a fresh look at 100 living artists from the Midwest, their personal stories and inspirations, along with several examples of their works. A wealth of urban settings, wide plains, flourishing cities, rushing rivers, and placid lakes are source material and inspiration for the artists. These works show how each artist interprets life. They explore the richness of the homegrown imagery of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin – their culture, society, and environment. They are delineating our stories for future generations in oil, pastels, sculpture, and other media. Their works are displayed in over 600 full color images. This book is essential for all who appreciate or practice art today".
This book will be available by May 2010 and you can check Schiffer Books website for more info.
